What is Solid Surface?
As the name suggests, solid surface countertops are made from a sheet material. It is usually around 12mm thick, made from resin with mineral filler. This could be either acrylic or polyester based depending on the manufacturer, and is available in an incredible range of colors and patterns. Dupot makes Corian, Samsung makes Staron, for example.. Solid surface can be cast into a variety of shapes, including sinks, shower pans and bathtubs. Sheet goods can also be heated and bent into three-dimensional shapes using a process called thermoforming, which adds to the versatility of the product. Highly durable, non-porous and easy to care for and repair, solid surface products are ideal for kitchen, bathroom, hospital and laboratory installations. They can be used not only for countertops, but for walls and more.
Will my solid surface counter-top have a seam?
Yes. All counter-tops will have a seam of one type or another. The seam could be on the counter-top itself or the separate pieces of material used for the edge buildup. All seams in solid surface fabrications are inconspicuous, meaning not noticeable. Seams are NOT invisible.
Does solid surface stain?
Solid Surface is a non porous product meaning that it will not stain. Solid surface will show a residue from substances such as coffee, which may appear to be a stain. However the discoloration can be removed with a Scotchbrite® pad.
Will solid surface scratch?
Solid surface is a very durable surface but can scratch. Scratches can be removed with fine sandpaper. Most scuffs can be removed with a Scotchbrite® pad.
Can I put a hot pot on my solid surface?
It is not recommended. When excessive heat and or pressure (weight) are applied to the surface you may get a “blush” mark or even a crack. It is strongly suggested that you use a hot pad or trivet with rubber feet on almost any surface.
How much heat can a solid surface take?
Although it remains stable and undamaged in temperatures up to 212ºF (100ºC), high heat or flame will damage your surface. In most cases, this damage can be repaired. However, to protect your surface from heat damage, always use a hot pad or a trivet with rubber feet when using hot pots, or heat-generating appliances like electric skillets or electric cooking pots.
Can I use my solid surface countertops as a cutting board?
It is not recommended. Although minor scratches can be easily removed, regular cutting on your countertop will necessitate more maintenance by the homeowner.
What if I damage my solid surface countertop?
Solid surface is repairable and renewable. Cracked or damaged areas, burn marks, scratches, and chips can all be repaired. This is a prime reason that solid surface is used in countertop fabrication. Your countertops are renewable and can remain in like new condition for a very long time.
What’s the best way to clean and care for my solid surface countertop?
The solid surface won’t clean itself (sadly). However, only very minimal care is needed to keep it looking as good as the day it was fitted. Clean by wiping the countertop with mild soap and water. Rinse the top and then wipe dry. You can remove stubborn stains with a liquid abrasive cleanser such as Soft Scrub® and a sponge. Use a small amount of the liquid abrasive and rub in a circular motion until the stain is gone. Rinse the area and then wipe dry. If the mark is really stubborn, or if the damage is more severe you can take advantage of our Solid Surface Renewal Program and we will help you make your surface look almost like new!
Will the renewal process make a mess?
One of the keys to getting a great finish on a solid surface is to keep dust to a minimum when polishing. We use the very latest dust extraction equipment both in the workshop and on-site, and therefore we create very little dust or disruption. (Plus we work with this all the time, and don’t like dust either!)
